Robert Manuel Nacionales Tafoya graduated from college with a 4.0 grade point average from Northern Arizona University. Mr. Tafoya then went on to graduate school where he pursued dual graduate degrees at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Tafoya earned his Masters of Public Policy (M.P.P.) at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School in 1998. While at Michigan, Mr. Tafoya was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow (Woodrow Wilson Foundation at Princeton University) and a Rackham Merit Fellow (University of Michigan). Both Fellowships earned by Mr. Tafoya were extremely competitive and highly prestigious.
The Gerald R. Ford of Public Policy is ranked No. 3 of all Public Policy schools in the United States (US News & World Report). The University of Michigan Law School is ranked No. 9 of all the law schools in the United States (US News & World Report).
Mr. Tafoya’s specialized practice areas are as follows: Governmental Law, Water Law, High Stakes Litigation, and Complex Business Disputes.
Mr. Tafoya, and his law partner, David Garcia, represented government entities such as the Water Replenishment District (WRD), the City of Long Beach (“Deputy City Prosecutor”), and various elected officials. Tafoya & Garcia’s representation of the Water Replenishment District resulted in a landmark victory for WRD against the Central Basin Municipal Water District. In addition, Tafoya & Garcia was instrumental in assisting the WRD in getting legislation passed in Sacramento to allow WRD to continue to be the sole government entity that is permitted to replenish the water table in its California jurisdiction.
In addition to his government law experience, Mr. Tafoya has won multimillion dollar settlements for his clients. Mr. Tafoya has tried multimillion dollar cases to successful jury verdict.
Robert Nacionales Tafoya’s started his practice of law at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro which was at the time the largest and most prestigious law firm in California.
Prior to forming Tafoya & Garcia LLP, Mr. Tafoya was a successful trial lawyer at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in Los Angeles. Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld is the 8th largest law firm in the world with offices in ten countries. In addition, while associated with the Akin Gump law firm, Mr. Tafoya spent time as a “City Prosecutor” at the City of Long Beach where he tried many, many cases to successful jury verdict.
Mr. Tafoya has represented Fortune 500 companies such as Ford Motor Company, Starbucks and Sony Corporation.
Further, Mr. Tafoya was an “Airman” in the United States Navy and served honorably aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kittyhawk (CV-63) in combat squadron VAW-116 stationed out of Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego, California from 1980 to 1984.
